Elmira Man Arrested after Forcible Kidnap of Springfield Woman

Springfield, Ore. – A quite Saturday morning turned suddenly violent when a 35 year-old Elmira man crashed his truck through a locked metal gate at a residence located at the 200 block of 20th Street. Hayes Matthew Herbert then kicked the front door to the residence off the hinges and assaulted a female visitor, ultimately dragging her by the hair out of the residence and forcing her inside his truck before speeding away.

Officers responded to the area and began searching for the suspect vehicle after residents at the 20th Street house called 9-1-1 reporting the kidnapping incident. A short time later a witness called police with separate information that they had been flagged down by an injured woman, dressed in sleep-wear running down the street near the 400 Block of 21st Street. Police arrived and found the frantic and injured woman, who reported Herbert had struck a car parked in the street in front of a house at 2685 G Street while driving and assaulting her within the vehicle. Police followed a debris trail of car parts and leaking fluids around the corner to Whitworth Lane and 28th Street, where the suspect vehicle truck was located. The truck had sustained a broken axle in the crash and was left unoccupied.
The witness who had notified police of the injured woman told police he saw the woman fleeing from Herbert and intervened, chasing Herbert down the block, losing sight of him when he cut through a backyard and onto 22nd Street.

Police established a search perimeter and deployed a Springfield police K-9 to search for Herbert. At 7:58 a.m. an officer searching the area observed Herbert run into the Gridiron Tavern at 2816 Main Street.
