Cottage Grove, OR – On July 11, 2018 shortly before midnight, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a dispute and shots fired at the 78600 block of Cedar Park Road in Cottage Grove. Initial information indicates that the location was a commercial marijuana facility. Deputies responded and attempted to locate the male suspect on the large parcel of land but were unable to find him. The Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team was called out to assist shortly after 1:00 am. Deputies searched the area and used a loud speaker to call into the building on the property where it was believed that the suspect was located.

At approximately 3:45 am, the suspect exited the building and engaged deputies with a firearm. Two deputies discharged their weapons and struck the suspect, who was subsequently transported to the hospital where he later passed away. The man has been identified as Joey Loop, a 40-year-old man. Loop had been known to be employed by the cannabis startup company One Gro. It is not known whether Loop was currently employed with the company at the time of the incident.

Loop’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

Loop served as the Director of Technology and as Compliance Officer for the controversial marijuana company One Gro that sought to overturn the prohibition of cannabis sales in the city of Creswell in 2017.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing.

The use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer in Lane County is investigated by the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team. At this time, there have not been any injuries reported by the involved deputies. The identity of the deputies involved is not being released at the time. Per Senate Bill 111, both deputies have been placed on Administrative Leave during the initial investigation.
