At some point overnight, Montez was awakened by loud noises he thought to be shots fired, and unknown people talking.

Montez took his handgun after he had seen a person walking across the campground, and fired in the direction of the person.

The person struck by the fired shot was Moody, who was transported to an area hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. Moody was pronounced dead just after 3 a.m.

Montez reportedly cooperated with authorities, and was lodged in Lane County Jail on a second-degree manslaughter charge.
