Polk County, Ore. – On 06/18/18 the Polk County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic blitz on Hwy 22 from the Dallas area into West Salem.
Deputy Greg Caudill was conducting a speed enforcement stop when he heard the noise of a motorcycle engine revving. He looked up to see a performance motorcycle in the fast lane along the concrete barrier. Deputy Caudill was able to check the motorcycle’s speed and it showed to be going 121 mph.
Deputies down the road attempted to stop the motorcycle and it increased it’s speed to 130+. Deputies elected not to try and chase the motorcycle due to the high speeds.
The next day a citizen messaged the sheriff’s office and was able to report that the motorcycle had a Washington plate.
On 06/30/18 Deputy Sam Mears was on Patrol in the area of Miller Av. and La Creole Dr in Dallas. Deputy Mears observed a motorcycle that he believed to be the same one that he had seen on 06/18/18. Deputy Mears pulled over and saw the motorcycle speed away at a high speed.
An Attempt To Locate call was sent out to local jurisdictions and a short while later a Salem Police Officer located the vehicle and stopped it for speeding. During his contact with the rider he contacted Deputy Mears to respond. Deputy Mears interviewed the motorcycle driver, Jonathan Debnam. Mr. Debnam admitted that he was the person we were looking for on 06/18/18. Mr. Debnam reported that after seeing the deputies on the side of the road he increased his speed to 140mph.
Mr. Debnam was arrested and lodged at the Polk County Jail for Attempting to Elude a Police Officer in a vehicle and Reckless Driving.
