Pedro Chavarin Jr. Arrested in Crash that Killed Fotu Leiato

Eugene, Ore. – After an investigation by EPD’s Major Collision Investigation team and Lane County Medical Examiner, Pedro Chavarin, Jr. , was arrested at 4 p.m. today, June 19.  Chavarin is charged with first degree Manslaughter in the death of former University of Oregon football player Fotu Leito.

Manslaughter in the first degree is a Class A felony. (Read the entire law here ORS 163.118)

At 2:31 this morning, June 15, police responded to a reported a single-vehicle roll-over crash at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Kinsrow Avenue, in which the vehicle, a 2014 Kia sedan crashed and rolled off the road into some heavy brush. The driver, Pedro Chavarin Jr., age 22, reported to police that he was alone and not carrying any passengers. He was transported to a local hospital and then after an investigation, he was cited in lieu of custody for DUII.

This morning at 6:51 a.m., a woman walking near the area spotted a hand and brush over a person down a gravel path. Police responded and have found a deceased person.

The deceased passenger is identified as Fotu Tuli Leiato, age 21. The driver of the vehicle is Pedro Chavarin Jr., age 22.
