Bend, Ore. – A thorough investigation into this incident determined 53 year old Martin D. Adler and a 23 year old female live together in Bend as boyfriend and girlfriend. On the evening of July 30, they were in a silver 2017 Ford F150 in the area of Paulina Lake Road and Highway 97.
Adler and the female began arguing and she asked Adler to take her home. Adler refused and then drove her further out Paulina Lake Road. The female attempted to get away from Adler and get out of the vehicle. Adler then stopped the truck and placed his hands around the female’s neck and began strangling her.
The female was unable to breath and attempted multiple times to break his hold on her neck. Fearing for her life, the female removed a small knife from her pocket and stabbed Adler multiple times in self-defense.
The female was able to then get out of the truck and flag down the first vehicle she saw. The driver of this vehicle allowed her to call 911 and then drove her to the Sheriff’s Office substation in La Pine to meet deputies.
Adler was subsequently located by deputies at a residence in La Pine. Deputies rendered first aid to his injuries and summoned emergency medical assistance. Adler was then transported by AirLink air ambulance for serious injuries to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
On the afternoon of August 1st, Adler was taken into custody by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office detectives on charges of Coercion, Strangulation, and Assault 4. Adler was then lodged at the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Adult Jail.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Oregon State Police, Sunriver Police Department, La Pine Fire Department and AirLink.
